Welcome Picnic

The annual Malaysian Nottingham Games took place on the 6th November and was attended by the UCL Malaysian Society. Representing us were a number of sports teams including football, netball, basketball, badminton and board games. Despite the 4am early start which allowed for little rest, all our teams played well, demonstrating commitment and great sportsmanship. We proudly brought home one gold medal for the Scrabble tournament, won by Nigel, a second year student. Apart from sports matches taking place throughout the day, the event was also made complete with a Malaysian food fair that featured countless stalls selling nasi lemak, mee rebus and kuih. It was a long and exhausting day but one full of excitement, with a friendly yet competitive air. Thank you to all the team players as well as the supporters who brought to life the spirit of the UCL Malaysian Society!

Pre-Departure Camp

Two weeks into the academic year, the Malaysian Society held it's first event in London. The Welcome Lunch was held at the Holiday Villa Hotel where a Malaysian buffet meal was served. As the lunch was attended by both old and new members alike, it was a joyful afternoon as the members had the opportunity to meet and catch-up with each other. Overall, it was a successful event with a good turnout and wholesome food. Photos from the event can be viewed in the 'gallery'.

Pre-Departure Briefing

As the first Malaysian Society event of the academic year, the day officially marked the beginning of our term as the committee. The event was held at Hotel Nikko in Kuala Lumpur on the 4th of September. Following a welcome and introduction by our president, Bhavik, each of the committee took turns to pass on as much information and advice to the freshers. Topics covered included 'finances', 'pre-departure preparations', and 'expectations upon arrival'. We were grateful to also have representatives from HSBC, one of our sponsors, to talk to the new students about financial advice and banking options offered by them. The briefing came to an end with presentations by representatives from UKEC (United Kingdom and Eire Council for Malaysian Students) and KNUKE (Kugiran Negara ke United Kingdom Enterprise - an enterprise promoting the Malaysian music scene in the UK). If you would like to find out more about the 2 bodies, please follow the links to their websites or contact one of our committee. As the event was held during the month of Ramadhan, we also enjoyed a 'buka puasa' meal together while enjoying creative performances by the groups of freshers. All in all, it was a successful event as we got to meet our future peers, and clear up any doubts and queries of students and their parents. Photos taken can be viewed in the 'gallery'. We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did! Here's to a good year!
